Mike Richter, the Stanley Cup-winning goaltender with the 1994 New York Rangers, will make a guest appearance during the first intermission of NBC Sports’ coverage of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal game between the Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Sunday’s coverage begins on NBC at 2 p.m. EDT. Richter will join studio host Pierre McGuire and studio analyst Mike Milbury to discuss the first period and promote both NBC’s and the NHL’s environmental initiatives.
Richter is a partner in Environmental Capital Partners, whose mission is to provide capital to and promote the growth of middle-market companies that offer products or services which enhance and protect the environment. An avowed environmentalist, Richter serves on the board of Riverkeeper, a leading environmental non-governmental organization organized by Robert Kennedy Jr. He is also a frequent speaker at environmental events.
In honor of Earth Day, NBC Universal designated the week of April 20 as "Earth Week," with more than 100 hours of Green-themed content airing across 42 NBC-Universal brands and 28 Web sites. In addition, the company announced "Green Weeks" for November 2008 and April 2009. This is all part of NBCU's "Green is Universal" initiative, the company's ongoing commitment to raise "Green" awareness, activate consumers to help save the environment, and substantially green our own operations. "Earth Week" marks NBCU's second "Green Week." The first one occurred in November 2007 and attracted nearly 200 million consumers collectively across the platforms of NBCU.
The NHL recently entered into a strategic marketing alliance with The GreenLife Organization LLC. GreenLife develops comprehensive global solutions that help businesses, institutions and individuals “go green” by increasing operational energy efficiency, purchasing power from renewable sources, and offsetting emissions. GreenLife is helping the NHL and its member clubs develop and document its green initiatives, while concurrently assessing current operations, identifying and implementing best practices, and recommending specific steps to reduce the League’s carbon footprint and improve its overall environmental impact. The NHL also has been working with the non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council, one of the country’s most effective and influential environmental organizations.
